Sea Monster Stories: Legends From Around The World
There have been many reported sea monster sightings of giant reptillians over the centuries. Sea serpents, lake monsters, dragons, giant river snakes, the list goes on. Reptiles are excellent candidates for such stories because they live for a long time and most species continue to grow throughout their lives. It is possible, in theory, for certain reptiles such as snakes and crocodiles to reach massive size. Let's have a look at some of these supposed giant reptillian monsters that have scared people witless over the centuries. Gloucester Sea SerpentSightings of the Gloucester sea serpent have been reported for several hundred years from many independent witnesses. The creature is said to be up to 100 feet (30 meters) long. It has been called a variety of other names including the Great New England sea serpent and the Boston Sea Serpent. Loch Ness MonsterGood old Nessie is the backbone of the sea monster community. For a creature of such high status there is very little evidence that suggests it is real. This is despite several scientific expeditions into the Loch just to search for it. A theory that has gained some ground in recent years is that Nessie is actually a Basilosaurus, a type of ancestral serpent-like whale and so is a mammal. The Lake Murray MonsterThis creature was first reported in 1933. Actual evidence of this creature is virtually non-existent save for a photograph that looks like a set of floats from a fishing net. Still, the Lake Murray Monster has aroused a good deal of interest amongst monster hunters. The Turtle Lake MonsterAnother supposedly serpentine like creature is said to inhabit Turtle Lake, located in West-central Saskatchewan in the USA. The length of this creature has a believable range of between three and ten meters. Giant sturgeon fish live in the lake that are within this size range, offering a very plausible explanation for these sightings. The Rainbow SerpentThis mythical serpent is a creator spirit of the Australian Aboriginal dreamtime. It shaped the land during the time of creation and dwells in freshwater billabongs.
