Galapagos Island Animals: Snakes
Amongst all the Galapagos Island animals there are three species of snakes. While these snakes are venomous, they are not lethal as their poison is quite mild to humans. These snakes are not well known to science as, unlike the other fauna of the islands, they are shy and avoid people at all times.
All three species of snakes have two or three subspecies to them, resulting in many different populations of snakes on the islands. They kill their prey by constriction and feed on young lava lizards, marine and land iguanas, finches, grasshoppers, indeed anything they are able to tackle and successfully subdue. The Galapagos snakes can be found on all the islands except the northernmost ones of Wolf, Darwin, Pinta, Marchena and Genovesa. Their absence on these islands is likely due to either unfavorable currents or unsuccessful colonization attempts. The snakes themselves are prey to the Galapagos Hawk and possibly also introduced feral cats. Almost nothing is known of their biology or behavior.
